Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water Bodies Restoration and Management Project (Credit No. - 4846 IN (IBRD) and 4255- IN (IDA))

The objectives of the project are: (i) intensification and diversification of agricultural production, (ii) institutional modernization in irrigated agriculture and, (iii) rehabilitation of about 5763 tanks with CCA of about 4 lakh hectare. The main components of the project are (i) Irrigation Systems Modernization in a Sub-basing Framework, (ii) Agricultural Intensification and Diversification, (iii) Institutional Modernization for Irrigated Agriculture, and (iv) Water Resources Management. The project started on 12.02.2007 and its scheduled closing date was 30.09.2014. The total estimated cost of the project is about US $ 485 Million out of which World Bank assistance is US $ 434.80 million (includes 335.00 million under IBRD & 99.80 million under IDA components). US$ 229.77 Million (129.97 IBRD & 99.80 IDA) has been disbursed upto March 2013.

The project started on 12.02.2007 and its scheduled closing date is 30.09.2014. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.2383.42 crore. The total World Bank assistance is US $ 488.78 Million which includes US $ 335.00 million under IBRD & XDR 99.80 million under IDA. US$ 180.40 million under IBRD & XDR 99.80 million (equivalent to US $ 154.35 million) under IDA has been disbursed upto 31.03.2014 i.e. total disbursement of US $ 334.75 million.

As on 31.12.2013, rehabilitation works in 4798 tanks have been completed i.e. 91% achievement. Out of 769 anicuts, rehabilitation of 658 anicuts has been completed.  Rehabilitation of supply channels in 8063 km. out of the stipulated 8980 km. has been completed. Under the component "Water Resources Management", SWaRMA has already begun recommending water allocation for various schemes in line with State Govt's Order and has created value-added integrated water resources thematic scenario maps required for water planning, budgeting and management for nine river basins. In addition, SWaRMA has begun water audits on projects. SWaRMA has taken commendable steps to create the web-enabled database on water potential, water utilization, details of water bodies and storage facilities in Tamil Nadu and various thematic maps.
